We concluded our celebration of Black history month with speeches inspired by Martin Luther King ‘I have a dream’.
Take a look at some of our fabulous speeches. They were written by Kyann, Emily, Chloe and Evan. Well done!

This week we have been discussing times where we may have felt judged by who we are. We feel that sometimes we can be judged by:
• The way we dress
• The way we wear our hair
• The size or height that we are
• The way we talk
After lots of discussion and sharing our worries Kestrels realised that as long as we are happy in ourselves we should not care what others think. That we are all special individuals and all bring something unique to the world.
Kestrels enjoyed using the iPads today to consolidate their understanding of the Singapore Bar, which will help them tackle a range of challenging Maths problems next week.
If you have an iPad, why not download www.thinkingblocks.com It is a free app and brilliant for children and adults!
As part of Black History month, Year 5 researched the meaning / reason behind Black History month and completed a comprehension on what we learnt.
We then looked at images from American history and discussed their feelings about how non-whites were treated and how we should treat one another.
“Everyone should be treated the same, it doesn’t matter what your skin colour is.” Lewis
“You should treat others as you would like to be treated.” Leo
“Non-whites should have been treated better than this.” Hanson
“We should treat each other with respect and understand that we are all different but similar in lots of ways.” Kyann
“Everyone should have equal rights.” Emily
Kestrels would like to congratulate our new school council representatives – Wana and Josh. The class voted and both gained the most votes.
So what changes would they like to make?
Wana – I want to ensure all the children and staff are happy and give them what they want
Josh – I want to make sure children enjoy school and feel safe
Last week we were drawing pictures of the countryside using pencils and crayons. This week we have used water colours. We discussed primary and secondary colours and practised different techniques to lighten and darken colours.
We have used most of our behaviours for learning during this lesson including creativity, concentration and perseverance. Well done Kestrels!
This week in RE, we were exploring what Jains do to care for our world.
What is Jainism?
Jainism, traditionally known as Jain dharma, is an ancient Indian religion belonging to the śramaṇa tradition. The central tenet is non-violence and love towards all living beings.
We explored Jains view on caring for the world then discussed what promises we could make to take care of our world:
Today we have been looking at the word ‘tolerance’ and being ‘tolerant’ but what do Year 5 think this word means?
Josh – Not having tolerance is being unkind to someone
Jessica – Not understanding others
We gathered up our notes on what we thought being tolerant means, we then produced a short video clip showing an example of someone having tolerance for others.
Emily – Having tolerance is accepting others
Fabian – Its accepting other and their differences
Wana – It is being patient and understanding that others are different but we should all be treated the same
Year 5 have been looking at caring and compassion. We discussed how we can care for the world. There were lots of great ideas.
• Using less fuel- especially cutting down on the use of cars
• Wasting less- less paper so less trees would need to be cut down, switching lights off
• Recyling
• Reusing
We created care labels for the world to show how to take better care of it, so that we and future generations can enjoy it.
