Adding sound to create atmosphere

During today’s Computing lesson with Mr Baddhan, Year 5 Kestrels learned about a new program called Audacity – a sound editing tool. It allows children to edit their recordings and then add sound effects.

Mr Baddhan asked the children to record their ‘Dramatic Paragraph’ stories into Audacity and then add sound effects downloaded from another sound resources website called Sound Bible.

The children were also reminded about the importance of downloading copyrighted files from the internet. Always ask permission from the website or owner.

We will post some of our finished recordings here later in the week.

Counting in Roman Numerals

Kestrels continued with their understanding of variables in Scratch with Mr Baddhan today.

Today they were shown how to get their sprites to count in Roman Numerals. The children were asked to work out an algorithm to get two of their sprites to count upto ten, one sprite in English counting and the other sprite in Roman Numerals.

The Kestrels were asked to use the variable blocks, repeat and if, else functions in today’s task.

The children then tried to add their voice recordings to say the sound as the numbers were appearing on screen.

Using email

During Computing today, Year 5 Kestrels learned about emails and how they work. They learned that an email always has the ‘@'(at) symbol.

Every email address looks like this:

Kestrels then discussed the following points:
– Why do people use emails?
– Which are the advantages of using emails?
– Are there any disadvantages?
– Do you have an email account at home?

The class then discussed the risks of having email. They all agreed that keeping passwords safe was important to ensure that no one can check your emails. And they added that hacking was another big risk in having your email.

The children then were given their own email address, which they will keep until they leave school. They will be able to use and explore email. Kestrels were so excited having their own emails and looked at the various types of folders Inbox, Drafts and Sent Items.

Online Safety note
Children can access their emails from school and outside of school. The accounts are restricted so they cannot receive email from outside of school. And they are not able to send emails outside of the school domain. All emails are monitored.

Historical weather data in Excel

During today’s Computing with Mr Baddhan, Kestrels have been learning about Microsoft Excel and how it can do alot of Maths work for you.

The children worked through some historical weather data and added it into Excel. The date they were focusing on was the average rainfall for a specific year. They then were shown how to get the average, sum and create a bar chart.

The children worked out a quick of doing this through formulas on Excel.

Sophie’s maze game!

Well done to Sophie for creating her own game (with the help of her dad!) at home.

Using Scratch, Sophie created a game where a user can control the mouse sprite to get through the maze to collect the cheese.

Mr Baddhan is so pleased with Sophie’s willingness and using her own initiative and understanding of Scratch to create this game.

Try Sophie’s game below…

Our finished Ping Pong games

Today Year 5 Kestrels finished programming their ‘Ping Pong’ games using Scratch.

In the last few lessons, the children have been trying to understand which variables they will be using and also how the points will change depending on the colour the ball touches.

At the end of the lesson, Kestrels tried each others games out giving feedback on each.

Here are a sample of a few completed games.
